Modern X-ray and CT scanning (2005–2021) has revealed the mechanism's extraordinary sophistication, including a gear train that models the irregular orbit of the moon using the epicyclic theory of Hipparchus. No other device of comparable complexity is known from antiquity. The technology was not matched until the 14th-century astronomical clocks of Europe.
