A proposed solution to the Fermi Paradox suggesting civilizations hide their existence to avoid destruction, popularized by Cixin Liu.

OVERVIEW

The Dark Forest theory posits that the universe is a dark forest where every civilization is a hunter. Any civilization that reveals its location will be destroyed because: (1) All civilizations want to survive. (2) It's impossible to know if others are friendly. (3) The safest action is to destroy any discovered civilization first. Therefore, the reason we see no ETIs is that everyone is hiding.

KNOWN FACTS

The theory provides a logically consistent solution to the Fermi Paradox

No evidence of ETIs exists, consistent with the theory's predictions

The assumptions are consistent with evolutionary biology

Human history shows contact between civilizations often ends badly

The theory is discussed in academic philosophy and SETI ethics

CLAIMS

The universe is a dark forest where civilizations must hide to survive

Any civilization that broadcasts its existence will be destroyed

The reason we see no ETIs is that they are deliberately hiding

The theory explains both the Fermi Paradox and the lack of UFO evidence

Humanity's radio broadcasts may have already doomed us

EVIDENCE FOR

The theory provides a logically consistent solution to the Fermi Paradox

No evidence of ETIs exists, consistent with the theory's predictions

The assumptions are consistent with evolutionary biology

Human history shows contact between civilizations often ends badly

The theory is discussed in academic philosophy and SETI ethics

EVIDENCE AGAINST

The theory assumes all civilizations share the same survival logic

Cooperation is also an evolutionary strategy

The energy cost of interstellar destruction is enormous

The theory is a work of fiction, not a scientific hypothesis

Advanced civilizations would likely have moved beyond primitive survival instincts
