OVERVIEW

In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers — James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald McArthur — vanished without trace from the Flannan Isles Lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The relief vessel Hesperus arrived on December 26 to find the lighthouse fully operational but completely empty. The keepers' beds were unmade, suggesting the night shift had not been completed. One set of oilskins (waterproof clothing) was left behind, but the others were gone, as if two men had left in a hurry. A journal entry described a severe storm, but weather records showed no such storm. The men were never found.

KNOWN FACTS

The lighthouse was in perfect working order with lamps lit and oil refilled

One bed was unmade and half-eaten food was on the table

One set of oilskins was left behind while two were taken

One journal entry described the keeper's distress about a severe storm

The local logbook recorded entries up to December 15, then nothing

CLAIMS

The lighthouse keepers were swept away by a freak wave

A violent confrontation between the keepers led to murders and cover-up

Supernatural forces were involved in the disappearance

The men were abducted by foreign agents or pirates

The carved message 'DOVE' found in the lighthouse was a clue or a warning

EVIDENCE FOR

The lighthouse was in perfect working order with lamps lit and oil refilled

One bed was unmade and half-eaten food was on the table

One set of oilskins was left behind while two were taken

One journal entry described the keeper's distress about a severe storm

The local logbook recorded entries up to December 15, then nothing

EVIDENCE AGAINST

Freak waves are documented in the area and could have swept the men away from the landing

No bodies were ever found, consistent with drowning at sea

The distress in the journal may have been due to isolation, not danger

The 'DOVE' carving was likely a previous vandal's work, not related to the disappearance

The relief vessel was delayed by weather, giving time for evidence to be lost
