OVERVIEW

Operation Midnight Climax was one of the most infamous MKUltra subprojects. The CIA established brothels in San Francisco and New York where clients were unknowingly dosed with LSD and other drugs while being observed through one-way mirrors. The purpose was to study drug effects on human behavior and to explore the potential of drug-induced interrogation. The operation was run by CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb and involved collaboration with local law enforcement in some cases. The program was exposed during the Church Committee hearings in 1975 and remains one of the most disturbing examples of government-sponsored human experimentation.
