Sodder Children Disappearance
The 1945 Christmas Eve house fire in West Virginia where five of ten Sodder children vanished without trace, leading the family to believe they were not in the fire.
OVERVIEW
On the night of December 24, 1945, a fire destroyed the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia. The parents George and Jennie Sodder escaped along with four of their ten children. The other five — Maurice, Martha, Louis, Jennie, and Betty — were never found. No remains were ever discovered in the ashes, which was unusual since a fire of that size should have left identifiable bone fragments. The family received letters from witnesses claiming to have seen the children alive after the fire. An investigation by the West Virginia State Police found no evidence the children died in the fire.
