Project ARTICHOKE
The CIA's predecessor program to MKUltra, focused on interrogation techniques, hypnosis, and drug-induced mind control from 1950 to 1953.
INVESTIGATION OVERVIEW
Project ARTICHOKE was a secret CIA program established in 1950 to research interrogation techniques, including the use of drugs, hypnosis, and psychological manipulation. It was the direct predecessor of MKUltra and shared much of the same personnel and methodology. ARTICHOKE focused on extracting information through chemical and psychological means, testing techniques on unwitting subjects and volunteers. Unlike MKUltra, ARTICHOKE was more narrowly focused on interrogation rather than broad behavioral engineering. The surviving documents are limited, and the full scope of the program remains unclear.
KEY CLAIMS
ARTICHOKE tested LSD and other drugs on unwitting human subjects
The program experimented with hypnotic interrogation techniques
Some subjects suffered lasting psychological harm
ARTICHOKE's findings directly informed and transitioned into MKUltra
The program involved coordination with foreign intelligence services
SUPPORTING EVIDENCE
Declassified CIA documents confirm ARTICHOKE's existence and interrogation focus
Documents reference use of 'special interrogations' involving drug testing
Personnel records show the same individuals worked on both ARTICHOKE and MKUltra
Church Committee investigation referenced ARTICHOKE as MKUltra's predecessor
Surviving financial records show funding for chemical interrogation research
COUNTER ARGUMENTS
Fewer records survived for ARTICHOKE than MKUltra, limiting full understanding
The program was officially focused on defensive interrogation research
Some claimed techniques may not have been practically implemented
The distinction between ARTICHOKE and MKUltra may be more bureaucratic than substantive
Lack of detailed records makes some claims difficult to verify
